With that, he managed to carve sound waves on a wax cylinder for play them back later. With the invention of the carbon microphone in 1923, sound waves could be translated into electric signals.
The italian researcher Marconi was the one who made it to transmit information with the aid of electromagnetic waves via the space into the remote. 1903 took the first public aerial transmission over the Atlantic sea. In the beginning, those where electric on/off impluses like the Morse codes. People learned to modulate low frequency speech/music to high frequency for wireless transmission, to transport them over large distances and to make them hearable with a simple playback device with demodulation.
On December 22nd, 1920, a first illegal experimental broadcast of a christmas concert has been undertaken via the Königs Wusterhausen transmitter. Radio reception was possible with a simple detector recevier. The detector receiver needed no electric supply, just the received energy was only enough to listen via headphones. Condition was a long wire antenne and a ground connection. After other countries started already with radio programmes, Germany started with a regularly scheduled radio programme only in 1923.
The development of the receiving technology continued. With the use of electron tubes, a loudspeaker could be used as well, so that every person in the room could follow the radio programme. With that, the receiver technology evovled further on.
The radio was supposed to be unpolitical and serve mainly entertainment and information. This changed radically with the nazis taking the power on January 30th, 1933. The “Volksempfänger VE301” appeared on the market. It costed 76 reich marks. For that everyone could own a set, it was possible to pay the sum with rates.
